Lena Cagle Library in Bridgeport, AL

A Flowery Mystery
by the very imaginative kids at the Lena Cagle Public Library

(On a personal note, we are very excited about what happened after this story was written. Mrs. Brown, the librarian at the LCPL, presented Roosevelt Rat and Claudia the Hippo with their very own library cards! We will post a photo soon! Thanks!)

And then it happened! Daffodil awoke and wondered why it was suddenly so extremely cold. She shivered as she rolled over and tried to cover up. Imagine her surprise when she opened her eyes and discovered that her shell was missing!
Daffodil was a very nice turtle who looked a little like a troll. Her shell, however was BEAUTIFUL! It was black and had pictures of gorgeous flowers painted on every section of the shell.

Crockadolly, a silly alligator who lived next door to Daffodil in their apartment building in downtown Atlanta, saw how pretty the shell was and wanted it for her own. So she waited until Daffodil was asleep and carefully slid the shell off our turtle friend, and took it home to try it on.

When Daffodil discovered the reason for her chilliness, she called Samantha, a very feathery chicken who managed their apartment building and told her about the incident. Everyone thought that Sam was very very nice, so they were quite shocked when she found the shell in Crockadolly's apartment, pecked the alligator until she let it go, and then - GASP! - ran off with the shell, leaving her job, her friends, and a very cold turtle behind.

As of this moment, Samantha the chicken has not been located and no one knows what has become of the shell, but there is a rumor that it has been seen on eBay. (Really! type in Painted turtle shell and you'll see!)

The End
