Stevenson Public Library, Stevenson, AL

(Claudia writes: Depot Days is a big annual celebration in Stevenson, AL that features a lot of fun stuff, activities and FOOD! Funnel cakes, hot dogs, onion rings, and more. The night we visited the library, they asked us to perform outside on a rail car for the Depot Days attendees, and it was homemade ice cream night. For 50 cents per bowl, you could eat chocolate, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, chocolate, peach, and chocolate ice cream made by the folks there. It was so delicious that - well, let’s just say that we now owe Monica Davis, the librarian several dollars for ice cream!)

Another Doggone Good Mystery

By the Depot Day Readers of Stevenson Library

In 1892, Truitt Davis made a picture of his dog, Gordon Annabelle Max. He got the photographer to print it out as large as possible and put it in a frame. He loved his dog and he loved this great photo of his dog almost as much.

You would think that a guy who loved a dog would be a kind sweet person. But this is not the case with Truitt. He was grumpy as all get out, and some say that he had been wrinkled like an old man since he was just a boy.

During Depot Days, on Homemade Ice Cream Night, while everyone was downtown watching Claudia the Hippo and her helper, Tommy Johns do a show for the library, Katie, a pet rock on questionable character, slipped unnoticed into Truitt’s house and took off with the picture of Gordon Annabelle Max, frame and all.

Truitt was beyond upset. The first thing he did was to call the town’s police chief, a space alien named Umm, and reported the missing picture. Umm rode over on his motorcycle, his long brown hair flowing behind him, and went to work. He snuck up to every home in town and peeked in the windows until he got to Katie’s where he saw the famed photo of Truitt’s dog hanging over her fireplace.

Umm was ready to haul her off to jail, but Truitt surprised everyone by forgiving her and asking Umm to let her go. Some people thought Truitt was a changed man, but most believe it was because he had just eaten some delicious vanilla ice cream left over from the ice cream social the night before.

The End.

(Any resemblance between the characters in this story and anyone real person is the fault of the children who attended the show. Don’t blame us!)

We love comments. Let us know what you think!
